Chlorpyrifos-induced Histopathological Alterations in Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Schneider 1799) Tadpoles: Evidence from Empirical Trials

چکیده
This paper reports the histopathological responses of the gill, liver and tail muscle tissues in tadpoles of the Asian Common Toad Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Schneider, 1799) exposed to chlorpyrifos a common organophosphorus pesticide. Tadpoles of Gosner stages 24-26 were continuously exposed to low, mid and high (500, 1000 and 1500 μgl –1 ) concentrations of chlorpyrifos for two weeks. Histological alterations in the tissues of the surviving larvae were microscopically examined both at the end of the exposure period and after a week following the final exposure. Several histological alterations were noted in the gills, liver and tail muscles of the larvae exposed to 1500 μgl –1 of chlorpyrifos. The gills of exposed larvae showed architectural distortion resulting from reduced primary and secondary gill lamellae and blood vessels, and alterations in the gill epithelium. In the liver sinusoidal congestion and dilation, cytoplasmic vacuolation and changes in hepatocytes such as hyperchromatic nuclei and nuclear fragmentation were observed. The tail muscle tissue suffered from severe atrophy and myotomal disintegration. Although histological alterations in the gill and liver tissues were noted only at the high concentration, changes in the muscle tissue i.e. muscle degeneration and atrophy, were apparent at both low and mid concentrations. The degree of damage in surviving larvae in a week following the final exposure was lower than that observed during the exposure, probably indicating recovery or resistance. The findings of the present study emphasize the need to investigate possible sublethal damage induced by pesticides in amphibians inhabiting agricultural habitats.

Effects of agrochemicals on disease severity of Acanthostomum burminis infections (Digenea: Trematoda) in the Asian common toad, Duttaphrynus melanostictus
Background: Agrochemicals are widely used in many parts of the world posing direct and indirect threats to organisms. Xenobiotic-related disease susceptibility is a common phenomenon and a proposed cause of amphibian declines and malformations. For example, parasitic infections combined with pesticides generally pose greater risk to both tadpoles and adult frogs than either factor alone. Here, ...
متن کاملDevelopmental disruptions induced by insect growth regulator (Novaluron) in Bufo melanostictus tadpoles.
Novaluron is an insect growth regulator (IGR) used against fruit-borers and domestic pests. In this study, effects of different concentrations (0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5 microg l(-1)) of novaluron on the tail regeneration, limb development and metamorphosis were examined in Bufo melanostictus. Thyroxine (1.0, 2.0, 3.5, 5.0 microg l(-1)), which promotes amphibian development/metamorphosis, and vitamin...

Indirect interactions among community members impact on organisms. The effects of two snails, banded pond snail, Bellamya bengalensis (Lamarck), and Red-rimmed melania, Melanoides tuberculata (Müller), and tadpoles of Asian common toad, Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Schneider), on nonbiting midge larvae, Chironomus striatipennis Kieffer, were observed in experimental microcosm. Decrease in tube n...
متن کاملMelatonin effects on the melanophores in adults and tadpoles of Rana cyanophlyctis (Schneider)
Introduction: Effects of melatonin (MT) were comparatively examined on melanophores of isolated skin in adults and tadpole’s tailfin of a frog Rana cyanophlyctis. MT is generally considered as a potent melanophores aggregating hormone besides regulating the sleep wake cycle in vertebrates. Methods: Melanophore size index (MSI) was chosen as a recording parameter of the responses. Concentr...
متن کاملEffect of vitamin A on acid and alkaline phosphatase activities during tail regeneration in the tadpoles of the Asian toad
Anuran amphibians have the potential to restore their lost tail by regeneration, although, unlike urodeles their regeneration capacity is restricted to larval stages. Application of vitamin A or retinoids to tail amputated tadpoles causes abnormal tail regeneration and subsequently leads to development of ectopic organs (limbs and pelvic girdles) at the site of the tail, a phenomenon widely kno...
